Garmin Nuvi 1690 Hiking GPS Review

Pros: nüLink! Services, Hands-free calling, Elevation readings

Cons: Too many ads, MicroSD media

Launched in January 2010, Garmin Nuvi 1690 Hiking GPS is loaded with many features for straightforward navigation. Its nüLink! Services for Connected Navigators offer quick and real-time updates on the gas prices, traffic conditions, flight status, weather, and more. That’s an enormous plus as you’ll stay updated on all the data you would like on the fly. And, it also tells you about local events, restaurants, movie times in theaters on the brink of your location. It also allows you to search Google using preset categories or search terms of your choice. NüLink! service works on AT&T’s EDGE network and comes free for the primary two years of use. you will be saving many dollars there! After this free subscription time, you’ll need to pay a little fee to continue this service (that’s a true spoiler!).

When it involves planning, Garmin Nuvi looks pretty sleek and classy with its gloss-black frame and chrome trim. The 4.3-inch touch screen gives you a transparent view of the streets and maps. The touch screen may be a tad unresponsive at some times. The navigation, on the opposite hand, maybe a breeze. (Though you a great many need to press the buttons a touch hard). you only need to press the up/down buttons or slide the screen to navigate the menu.

Like most Garmin Nuvi models, the most menu on 1690 is additionally very simple. it’s two large icons – “Where to?” and “View Map” with a row of small buttons for Volume, Phone, and Tools at rock bottom.

The Bluetooth setting makes it super easy for you to pair your phone with the navigator to transfer all the phone numbers. But, the downside is that you simply can’t directly reach the amount you would like, but need to scroll up and right down to get to the proper number.

Garmin 1690 has just a microSD size card slot. It means less capacity, but it also means you’ll use a good range of compatible SD cards. So, this feature neither gets a thumbs up or down.

Nuvi’s Ciao Friend Finder is a stimulating addition to the device. This patent-pending software helps you share your location and other details with shared friends. might be useful, if you’ll take your eyes off the road to mention ‘Ciao’ to friends!!

The Bottom Line:

If you are looking for a reliable GPS to navigate your way through the town, the Garmin Nuvi 1690 may be a good selection.
